Matthew LaBanca’s confessional play COMMUNION makes its official Off-Broadway debut. Ripped from the headlines, COMMUNION is a one-man show about a gay Catholic school teacher who is fired when the church discovers that he married a man.
His termination causes a crisis of faith, not only for himself but for his entire community. Based on the real-life story of Broadway actor and playwright Matthew LaBanca (Young Frankenstein, White Christmas, and A Christmas Carol), COMMUNION spotlights themes of religious hypocrisy, spiritual trauma, faith and hope, reminding those who would use religion to discriminate against LGBTQ people that the most basic tenet of spiritual life is that we are called to love one another.
Directed by Kira Simring, COMMUNION’s production team includes Julianne Merrill (sound design / programming), Ryan Belock (projection design), Will Morris (scenic and lighting design), Christine O'Grady Roberts (choreography), Lexi Vollero (additional programming), Julian Kelly (associate/co-projection design), Julian Singer-Corbin (production manager), and Richard Urquiza (stage manager). It is produced by Knocking at Your Door in association with Nancy Manocherian’s the cell theatre, Spin Cycle and Alissa Orlando. www.thecelltheatre.org

Opera ND presents a radically reimagined version of Monteverdi's The Coronation of Poppea, set amidst the sensationalist backdrop of reality TV and tabloid journalism.
Software, Hardware, equipment:
Isadora
Glypheo
Projector
2 Large format monitors
2 stationary handicaps with tripods operated by video crew
1 mobile phone on selfie stick, operated by performers
1 Mac Pro running Isadora with programmed opera scenes and Glypheo, run by one student associate
Isadora powered the show playback for real-time camera capture and video manipulation to create the illusion of a television studio. I trained undergraduate and graduate students with camera equipment and computer software to control the technological elements through the opera. Glypheo, a subtitle app, was also simultaneously programmed and displayed utilizing Isadora’s syphon function, allowing both live video and captions to be present at the same time. Two large format video monitors and one large projector screen served as outputs for the “live” television transmission and the television studio “control room.”

The Passion Live Performance + Tour
Projection Designer
In support of their latest album, The Passion, The University of Notre Dame Folk Choir is embarking on an East Coast tour. This fully staged production, directed by the University of Notre Dame’s Director of Musical Theater and Professor of FTT, Matt Hawkins, features lighting design from Sarah Prince, DPAC and projection designs by Notre Dame alumnus, Ryan Belock ‘12, and musical direction and compositions from Dr. J.J. Wright, ‘14, ‘17. An all-student cast delivers a two act musical dramatic ritualization of the events of Holy Thursday and Good Friday through song and spoken word.
Emerging from a collaborative process between students in the Folk Choir and professional artists, The Passion combines Scripture with original poetry, which is all set to newly composed music. As the disciples gather in the Upper Room to retell their story of Christ’s passion, they are joined by Memory, who guides them towards answering one character’s question, “Can grace abound in grounds turned fallow?” The answer, rendered beautifully by the students of the Folk Choir, is a resounding “Yes.”
Since its founding forty years ago, the Notre Dame Folk Choir has been committed to creating new music for liturgical worship and finding common ground between sacred and secular music. The 50-person ensemble serves the Notre Dame community, including the Basilica of the Sacred Heart, as one of its principal liturgical choirs and has toured across four continents and released eight studio albums. Led by Grammy® Award winner Dr. J.J. Wright and joined by guitarist Franky Rousseau and bassist Ike Sturm, The Passion was produced by Joe Henry and recorded at the Jerusalem Music Center after a week-long pilgrimage to the Holy Land in May, 2022.

Inspired by the lives of world-famous artists Claes Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen, Pair is a playful meditation on the nature of art and partnership. Claes and Coosje were renowned for their larger-than-life pop art sculptures that inflated everyday objects to extraordinary proportions. As the artists explore their creative process, something fantastical is happening as a pear (yes, the fruit) embarks on a worldwide quest for self-discovery. What emerges is a funny and intimate play about collaboration, imagination, and love.
Pair explores the duality of Claes and Coosje's 30 year artistic and romantic collaboration and their artistic vision. They carry on a spirited debate about color, composition, scale, and the messy, exploratory way that art is made in this refreshingly whimsical love story.

The Broadway Bares 2022 audience was welcomed to Club Aphrodisiac in a Greek mythology-themed number inspired by Broadway Bares: Myth Behavior. Lead goddess Marie Rose Baramo was as captivating as the Sirens from The Odyssey, with her loyal subjects fawningly undressing her. Set to the smooth and steamy beats of a slow jam, she and lead god Justin Prescott tempted and teased the audience with ethereal moves choreographed by Chloe Davis.

Broadway Bares was created in 1992 by Jerry Mitchell during his time as a Broadway dancer. Looking for a way to raise awareness and money for those living with HIV/AIDS, Mitchell and six of his friends danced atop a New York City bar and raised $8,000 in Broadway Bares‘ first iteration.
The standing-room-only 30th anniversary edition filled Hammerstein Ballroom with an abundance of “community, unity and nudity” and raised $1.9 million, bringing its lifetime total to more than $21 million for Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS.

"All the world's a stage and all the men and women merely players" - Especially if life is just one big video game. As Pippin tries to find meaning in his life, he'll journey through the different 'levels' of life as if he has been sucked into a virtual world where paths can be determined, manipulated, or even betrayed. As Pippin plays each level and comes up empty, perhaps there is only one option left, the grand finale or the final level. This production explores the meaning of life, our human journey, and our destined paths through the lens of an 80's retro video game and toys with the question, "is life a simulation?"

As a research-driven, devised production, RE/CONNECT utilizes several disciplines to explore the nexus of technology, art, and what it means to be human. You have already encountered a monumental tablet that swipes through layers of live music, movement, costume technology, and projected media that explore the current fascination with online communication.
RE/CONNECT asks, 'Where do we find intimacy in an increasingly connected world?'"

“The beautiful three-screen projection display is a particular triumph of the production. It is especially prevalent in the stirring ending, broadcasting footage of Notre Dame's progress and prominence as a global force for good. The finale is moving, as intended.”
-Patrick McGuire, The Observer
“The multimedia elements invigorate the experience, and the ending is downright moving — it will make most people feel good about being associated with the place and its history. It’s a quality production; a gem of Notre Dame storytelling.”
-Kerry Temple, Notre Dame Magazine

“I've worked with Ryan in many different capacities over the past seven years, and believed that I had good sense of his multi-faceted skillset; as an incredible graphic designer, an honest and engaging performer, a great musician, a savvy businessman, and a competent and blooming collaborator in the world of technical theater. But nothing could have prepared me for the convergence of all these characteristics into his extraordinary work in projection design. Beginning with nothing but his own vision, Ryan transformed the interior of the DeBartolo Performing Arts Center into a an astonishing meshing of the seasons as a complement to the Notre Dame Shakespeare Festival's production of "The Winter's Tale". I've been proud of Ryan's accomplishments for many years, but this latest feat has topped them all!” — Scott Jackson, Executive Director, Shakespeare at Notre Dame
